Asian box turtles are semi-aquatic turtles known for their domed shells and unique ability to close up tightly like a box. They are hardy, long-lived reptiles that do best in enclosures providing both water for swimming and land for basking.

Highlights:

  • Lifespan: 30–40 years or more with proper care

  • Size: 6–10 inches as adults

  • Diet: Omnivorous—varied diet of insects, worms, leafy greens, aquatic plants, and occasional fruits; commercial turtle pellets can be offered as part of the diet

  • Enclosure: Large semi-aquatic setup; minimum 40–55 gallons for juveniles, much larger for adults, with both water and a land area for basking

  • Temperature/Lighting: Water temp 75–80°F, basking spot 85–90°F; UVB lighting required for proper shell and bone health

  • Temperament: Generally shy but can become more outgoing with time; handling should be minimal

  • Special Notes: Excellent swimmers; water must be filtered and kept clean; long-term commitment due to lifespan
