Red foot tortoises are medium-sized tortoises native to South America, easily recognized by the red or orange scales on their legs, head, and tail. They are hardy, personable reptiles that adapt well to captivity when given proper space and care. Their curious nature and long lifespan make them a rewarding pet for dedicated keepers.

Highlights:

  • Lifespan: 40–50 years, sometimes longer

  • Size: 10–14 inches on average; some may reach up to 16 inches

  • Diet: Omnivorous—primarily leafy greens, vegetables, fruits (papaya, mango, berries), and occasional protein such as boiled egg or earthworms

  • Enclosure: Large outdoor pen in warm climates or spacious indoor tortoise table/pen; minimum 8'x4' area for adults

  • Temperature/Lighting: Basking spot 90–95°F, ambient 75–85°F; UVB lighting required indoors

  • Temperament: Generally docile and curious; can learn to recognize their keepers

  • Special Notes: Requires high humidity (60–80%); provide a shallow soaking dish; long-term commitment due to lifespan
