Sulcata tortoises, also called African spurred tortoises, are the third-largest tortoise species in the world. Native to the deserts of Africa, they are hardy, strong diggers, and can live for decades. While they are popular pets, their large adult size means they require a serious long-term commitment and plenty of space.
